End of the Road

Trash Day-oil on panel 40" X 28" 2008

This body of work confronts the conflicting feelings I experience about the suburban environment that I live in. I investigate neighborhoods full of successful individuals who use outward appearances to express their achievement. The lawns and shrubbery that surround their property speaks to the perceived perfections of the owners' lives. In the landscapes I isolate elements, such as a mailbox, a trash can, or a tree, to capture the sterility and loneliness the suburbs can produce. The promise of an idyllic lifestyle filled with beauty, friendship, and security is not always found at the end of the cul de sac. I am a participant in the suburban environment, yet my paintings I take on the role of observer, removing myself from the scene in search of a more objective perspective. The white spaces within the picture plane can be interpreted as the emptiness of daily life as well as the loss of purpose that confronts individuals. This body of work has forced me to confront my identity as wife, mother and artist.
